Strengthen PEEX Modelling Platform research and development through HPC-Europa3 Transnational Access Programme

The HPC-Europa3 Transnational Access Programme and its Scientific Users Selection Panel has approved and provided grants (which include financial support for up to 2 month visits to the University of Helsinki/ Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (UHEL-INAR) and access to the CSC super-computing infrastructure, resources, storage) for 2020-2021 to several successful PEEX community applicants. Successful applicants are from Norway, Denmark and Ukraine; and their research projects are in the field of the Earth sciences and environment are listed below. These grants allow to strengthen, expand and improve international collaboration among the PEEX partners on research and development of the PEEX Modelling Platform.

“High-Resolution Integrated Urban Environmental Modeling” (Dr. Igor Esau, Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre, Bergen, Norway). The focus is on joint studies of the urban climate and air quality/ atmospheric pollution using integrated approach to high-resolution numerical modeling and data fusion. Integration of the urban large-eddy simulation (meter-scale; PALM code – Parallelized Atmospheric Large-eddy simulation Model) and meteorological (km-scale; Enviro-HIRLAM code – HIgh Resolution Limited Area Model) simulations into a seamless modeling chain. Integration of the remote-sensing and citizen data with the model results to provide very high-resolution environmental assessment and prediction.

“Online Integrated Atmospheric Modelling: the Python Way“ (Dr. Roman Nuterman, University of Copenhagen, Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen, Denmark). The focus is devoted to joint development of next generation of the Enviro-HIRLAM modelling system in pure Python (at current moment – Fortran). The model should inherit the numerics of dynamical core and physical parametrisations, combine high-level abstractions and user friendliness as well as and grasp modern developments in HPC computing. The concept of open source software and new model code will be developed within GitHub infrastructure for its testing, documenting and distributing.

“Integrated Modelling for Assessment of Potential Pollution Regional Atmospheric Transport as Result of Accidental Wildfires” (Dr. Mykhailo Savenets, Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute, Kyiv, Ukraine). The study aims to analyze the regional influence of wildfire emissions occurred in the exclusion zone (abandon area) of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (Ukraine) and to identify the affected territories in case of active fires near and within radioactive polluted spots and in a close proximity to the plant.

“Integrated Modelling and Analysis of Influence of Land Cover Changes on Regional Weather Conditions/ Patterns” (PhD student Larysa Pysarenko, Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute, Kyiv, Ukraine). The study aims to investigate influence of land cover changes (current vs. scenarios, including hypothetical ones) and its consequences on meteorology for cases of extreme (with heatwave, heavy rains and snowfall) meteorological situations and air quality/ atmospheric composition. The main focus is analysis of regional scale weather, but influence on metropolitan areas will be also studied.
